Canine Calm for Reactive Dogs
Adult Canine Calm for Reactive DogsOptions
Description
Canine Calm for Reactive Dogs is registered for per lesson. Click on the drop down list to see the upcoming dates. There will be dates added for April, May etc. Typically the classes are offered twice a month. The class is structured this way to allow for practice time.
This program is designed to help dogs be better at keeping their heads together when faced with something in their environment that is exciting, novel, or concerning. If walking your dog is difficult due to lunging and barking then Canine Calm is the class for you.
Program structure:
Canine Calm is one Orientation (webinar), one 20-minute video that covers your pre-class leash handling homework and as many outdoor lessons as you would like to attend as they are registered for individually. 6 Canine Calm lessons are required to attend ADVANCED Canine Calm. The outdoor lessons are held in the green spaces on the west side of the facility. Class size is limited to 6 students with 2 instructors.
Canine Calm Orientation webinar:
Please watch the Canine Calm Orientation webinar before filling out the class registration form. Watching the webinar will help you decide if this is the right class for you and your dog. Link to webinar: https://youtu.be/jT73_5DBDGY Important note: the program structure described is the webinar has changed. The structure described above is correct.
Pre-class Homework:
This is a 20 minute video about leash-handling. Please practice these skills without your dog before your first in-person lesson. No special equipment is needed to complete this homework. To practice clip two leashes together or use a rope (see section below for information about the long-line needed for class). You are not expected to master these skills before class. Your first in-person lesson will focus on practicing these skills with your dog. Link to Leash Skills video: https://youtu.be/XXO5b1JPoqQ
Equipment:
This course requires a 15 ft. long line which you can purchase from us or if you already have one you can use your own. A harness is also needed for this class. The style of harness that will be most versatile for you is one that clip in the front (breast bone area) and the back (shoulder blade area).
Parking:
Park in the rear of the building. To access the rear lot enter the front lot and drive around the North side of the building.
Course Approach:
Our approach is based on Grisha Stewart’s protocol called BAT 2.0. Her book Behaviour Adjustment Training 2.0: New Practical Techniques for Fear, Frustration, and Aggression. It is available in paperback or as an e-book. It is an excellent book and will give you a detailed perspective of what we do in the Canine Calm lessons. Don’t be put off by the title of the book; the reason why we approach it this way is based on our observation of the dogs. We admit that this is tricky; each dog is unique; however, we see the same thing often; a dog that needs more skills, but the skills they are lacking the most are general coping skills.
Additional resources:
As part of your program you will receive access to various videos and materials pertaining to dogs that have a hard time coping with over-arousal or fear. These resources will give you a better understanding of the theory behind the practical experience you will get during classes with your instructors.
